Did You Know…

Hot Chocolate came to the UK in the 17th century, that’s a couple of centuries before the first chocolate bar was sold!

In the 17th century, hot chocolate was considered a rare and luxurious drink in England. It was made by dissolving chocolate shavings or cocoa powder in hot water or milk, and was often served in special chocolate houses, where the wealthy would gather to drink and socialise. The drink was typically sweetened with sugar or honey and flavoured with spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg. It was often served in ornate cups or glasses and was enjoyed both as a beverage and as a dessert. The high cost of chocolate meant that it was primarily consumed by the wealthy, and it was considered a sign of status and wealth to be able to afford such a luxurious drink.

As sugar and cocoa became more accessible in the 18th century it grew in popularity and tea shops and cafes started to offer hot chocolate on their menus. It was heralded for it’s (perceived!) medicinal purposes with some claiming it could even cure tuberculosis and heart failure…

In the 19th century a very clever man, Coenraad van Houten, created a process that made cocoa powder. This innovation was the birth of hot chocolate at home, as made making hot chocolate so much easier and convenient to make. Innovation and growth in the sector didn’t stop there, white chocolate was born alongside British household names Fry’s and Cadbury’s.

During World War I and World War II, hot chocolate became an important source of comfort for soldiers and civilians alike. It was often served in canteens and military mess halls, and it provided a warm and comforting beverage during cold and difficult times.

In the post-war years, the popularity of hot chocolate continued to grow, particularly as new ingredients and flavourings became available. For example, in the 1950s and 1960s, instant hot chocolate mixes (YUCK) became popular, which made it easier and quicker to make hot chocolate at home, and most marketing was aimed at children. We think the industry needs a bit of a shake up and we think hot chocolate is a grown-up-gourmet special moment. We are looking to the future now and we are really excited (after a small delay in our packaging being delivered) to begin production this coming week. Your orders will follow straight after that – thanks to all those who have already ordered!
